Bojagi Past and Future

The art of the Korean wrapping cloth in it’s whole-cloth form (Bojagi) and it’s patchwork from (Chogabo) has received international exposure since the mid- 90’s and now inspires quilters and fiber artists throughout the world.  It’s odyssey began with a course in Bojagi  taught by Chunghie Lee, first at Rhode Island School of Design, followed by workshops throughout the US and internationally.

Exhibitions of work by both Korean and western artists have been shown throughout the US, Korea, Europe, and Australia.  The crafts of Bojagi and Joomchi were taught and exhibited at the European Patchwork Meeting, the world’s largest quilters conference, in France in 2010, reaching audiences from 50 countries.  Bojagi is now taught in several countries, research and publishing is being done, and museums are collecting examples of traditional and contemporary Bojagi.  As knowledge of this ancient Korean craft tradition spreads abroad, artists in Korea are also inspired to find new ways to reinterpret the tradition, thus ensuring it’s evolution and survival.  The KOREA BOJAGI FORUM presents to an international audience the latest in academic research, hands-on workshops and exhibitions highlighting both traditional and contemporary approaches to the humble wrapping cloth.
